A Bible verse has been running through my head for the last few days. Why? I have no idea. The verse is 2 Chronicles 7:14.
“if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Sure, God was talking to the Solomon about the Israelites at the time, but as Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” So my reasoning mind says that since Jesus Christ is part of the triune God consisting of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, then God is the same yesterday, today and forever. (All discussion about my theology is welcome in the comments.)
Now I will never tell anyone that our sins are the cause of bad things happening to us, but I would say that sin keeps us apart from God, and if we make a heart change to turn from our sins then we can hear more clearly from God.
I just find it interesting that the first requirement is that we humble ourselves. (I’m not going to get into a pre-destination discussion around being called by His name and that we have to be pre-destined by God first before we humble ourselves.)
Humble is the opposite of pride. It is to show submissive respect. I think at times we all struggle with having a submissive respect for anyone or anything. I have had issues with being humble. Just this past week I was very proud in terms of being a father and had to humble myself before my children and ask for their forgiveness in how I disciplined them.
Humility as a blogger who is trying to build a platform is a difficult thing. How do I build a platform while being humble? I want to be on top of the world and have thousands of followers, being a thought leader and an influencer with a klout score higher than 80. But I believe humility is possible while still reaching incredible heights.
I think the key to humility is in serving. If I serve you my readers and add value to you in the content I create then you may just want to listen to what I have to say. Stephen Covey’s fifth habit is seek first to understand, then to be understood. I spend time looking at my stats, but numbers don’t tell me about you my readers. I know that most of readers are either Canadian or American, and that on average people return 2.8 times per month. Most of you come here via direct link, use Windows and Google Chrome. iPhone and Android users are equally represented. But none of this information tells me about you.
So I’m asking, why do read what I have to say? What topics I write on interest you the most? That is what I want to write more of. Every now and then I will have a great thought that you are going to hear about, but what draws you in? Why do you return 2.8 times per month? How do I get you to come back 12 times? (I know some of you are faithful and read every post.)
Please, I implore you, help me out by leaving your thoughts below. I am placing myself humbly before you. My home is your home, this is not intended to be a onesided conversation. Let’s make this a better place.
