As I sit to write, the only view through the kitchen window is darkness. Somewhat fitting for a time to create. As I sit to write, as I sit to create, it is reminiscent of Genesis 1:1-2.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
The blank blog post – formless and empty; the house shrouded in physical darkness, pitch black outside the window. All I can do is ask that Spirit of God that is in me gives me wisdom to write what people want to read.
In the beginning
Things are much easier when I start my morning with the Word of God. A short bible reading to activate my faith to help me understand why I write. As our spiritual lives become shrouded in darkness it is sometimes easy to forget the Word. I am not trying to be legalistic. Anyone who knows me and my heart knows that I am far from it. Things are just easier when God is given His rightful place…the beginning.
John 1:1-4 puts this in perspective:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
In the beginning was the Word. We cannot function without the Word of God. It is of critical importance in our lives. Through the Word all things were made and nothing was made without it. That to me says that as I write, as I take the focus from me to the Word that there is something of beauty that will be brought out.
Turn on some light
We cannot walk around in darkness or as my kids would say “you can, but you shouldn’t.” Some pretty simple things happen, you stub your toe, trip over something, get lost. Not exactly pleasantries. The other thing that happens when it is dark is that we tend to fall asleep. According to National Sleep Foundation, light is the most powerful regulator of our biological clock. This is true for us as believers as well. If you want to hear from God, you need to read the Bible. In Psalm 119:105 the writer declares:
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
It would seem the easiest way to be alert, and to be lead is to open up your bible and read what it says.
I know the last two posts have been a little preachy. Sometimes as I write, it is as much for me as it is for you. The situations in all of our lives vary, none of us lead a perfectly charmed life and we live in a time when darkness seems to be lurking around every corner. If we are not alert, in the Word, listening to what God has to say about certain circumstances, then it is easy to get lost. If we don’t check the latest self-help theories against the Word then we can end up in a deeper need for the light to be shone in our lives than we were previously.
